What is molecular oncology?
Molecular oncology examines genetic or molecular features of tumours that may support classification, prognostic assessment, treatment selection or other clinically relevant decisions.

The molecular test should be selected in context; not every tumour requires molecular testing.
Specimen considerations
Tissue quantity, tumour content, preservation, fixation, nucleic-acid quality and the specific assay all influence test suitability. Some molecular pathways may use tissue while others may use other specimen types where validated and clinically appropriate.
Molecular reporting
Results should be reported with the relevant alteration/biomarker, test limitations and appropriate clinical context. Molecular findings should be interpreted by qualified professionals within the patient's broader diagnostic and clinical picture.
